CELEBRATING OUR SUMMER 2022 WOMAN OF THE MONTH: DR. KRYSTLE DANDRIDGE

August 26, 2022

We are so happy to celebrate Dr. Krystle Dandridge as our Summer 2022 Woman of the Month! Dr. Dandridge has always been a lover of books, and had hopes of eventually opening her own bookstore, which she brought to fruition February 5, 2022 by opening The Book Bar in Richmond, Virginia, where her mission is to showcase and celebrate novels written by BIPOC authors and focuses on BIPOC characters. She also has her P.h.D in Psychology and owns her own therapy practice as well, and created a self-care and self-expression journal called The Expressive Journal in 2017. Seeing how Krystle has given back to the community, strives to uplift voices of color, advocates for sexual assault, and promotes awareness for representation, we thought she would be the perfect person to carry on our Woman of the Month tradition for our Summer 2022 issue. Congratulations Dr. Krystle Dandridge!

CELEBRATING OUR SEPTEMBER 2021 WOMAN OF THE MONTH: DR. DEBRA RODMAN

September 10, 2021

We are so happy to celebrate Dr. Debra Rodman as our September 2021 Woman of the Month!!! Dr. Rodman is currently an Anthropology/Sociology and Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies professor at Randolph-Macon College. She was also a state delegate for the 73rd district of Virginia, from 2018-2020. We wanted to honor Dr. Rodman due to her desire to fight for those who are less fortunate or are not in a position in which they can fully defend themselves. While she was a delegate, she led the charge on numerous bills that promoted equality for LGBTQ+ individuals, accessibility for voting, and a higher minimum wage. She is a very kind and driven woman who does not take no for an answer, and strives to include everyone in the world so that there is true equality for all. We unfortunately were not able to have a formal interview with Dr. Rodman, but we asked her all of the questions we would have asked her in said interview, and she responded with some fantastic answers. Please take a moment to read it down below!

Our Interview Questions for Dr. Debra Rodman

Regular Questions

1. Who is your biggest female role model?

bell hooks. She is a brilliant academic and feminist who writes complex theory into accessible reading. Her work is challenging and transformative and I always am left feeling hopeful and inspired by her work. I also recommend watching her on the series produced by The New School where she has several discussions with other authors/celebrities in a dialogue about the state of feminism, pop culture, etc. and she shows her absolute humanity and vulnerability. She inspires me to be authentic and true to myself.

2. What is the greatest obstacle you have faced? How did you overcome it, or how are you overcoming it?

My greatest obstacle is imposter syndrome. The feeling that you are not good enough and not worthy despite all of one’s accomplishments. The feeling that you don’t belong in spaces because you are convinced they are not for you. (And it’s not like it’s not true) The majority of us aren’t moving or living in spaces where we were meant to be- as a professor for example- it was a male-dominated field for generations and even though female professors are commonplace- we still struggle for equity. I overcame it by faking it. Absolutely faking it. And being kind to myself.

3. What are some sources of joy, both in your personal and political life?

Dr. Rodman’s Response: I know it sounds cheesy- but my children. They are 9 and 11 and are a complete joy. They love me unconditionally and I am still amazed by every word they come out of their mouths. I was ambivalent about becoming a mom- but I am so glad I did. My childhood was tough- so I am so glad I am able to give my children a childhood. They are my true joy. In my political life, my joy comes from connecting with people-just when I think I am so tired and overworked- one good connection with a voter, sparks me to keep going.

4. What piece of advice would you give to young women who aim to become elected officials?

Just be yourself and to embrace all that you are. Forget losing that 10 pounds and love yourself for who you are now. I shot my TV commercials at my biggest weight. People need to see all types and sorts of people running for office. To start, go volunteer for a campaign and knock some doors. I have met the most brilliant women in my campaigns. Women 20 years younger than me who are now my favorite people on earth.

5. What is your life purpose?

To just be. And kick some ass in the meantime.

6. What is your feminist philosophy?

That feminism is not just about fighting for gender equity but fighting all forms of oppression. Racism, sexism, classism, anti-Semitism, ableism, etc.

Rapid Fire Questions for Dr. Rodman

  1. Favorite season? The fall: apples and Halloween and leaf peeping.

  2. Favorite book? Out of Africa (it’s a total colonial project--apologies)

  3. Favorite film? Moana

  4. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? Japan

  5. Go-To Song? Led Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain”

  6. If you could have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Tamales

  7. Favorite quote? “So long as women are not free, the people are not free”- bell hooks

Thank you so much, Dr. Rodman for being such an inspiration!!!

Playlists For The Vibes™ (Part 1 of…?) - Follow-Up From My Woman of the Month Interview

Elizabeth Shull

One of my interview questions as Woman of the Month was about my favorite song. Well, I just couldn’t choose one! So I thought I’d go back to my answer to that question: “I couldn’t have just one favorite song, but I can make you some playlists…”

Well now is the moment. I have compiled some of my favorite songs, songs I think every human can listen to and vibe with. This list is not very extensive. It only includes songs in English, and I mostly tried to include songs most people wouldn’t haven’t really heard before. This is not to say I don’t like more well-known artists like Panic! At The Disco or MCR as much (because I love them too…), this is just a selection of songs I listen to whenever I feel a certain vibe.

Let me know if you listen to any of the songs, which list you vibe with most, and if I should make more of these mini-playlists! (Also, here’s the gauntlet. I’m throwing it on the ground right here, see? Other members of the magazine, I challenge you to make your own mini-playlists.)

CELEBRATING OUR MAY 2021 WOMAN OF THE MONTH: OUR BEAUTIFUL MOTHERS

May 14, 2021

If it wasn’t for our moms, we would not be the women we are today. All of our moms raised and loved us with patience, grace, and nurture. They laugh at our jokes, give us advice about anything, and are just simply there for us when we need them no matter how big or small the situation may be. They have sacrificed so much for each of us, and for that, we are so unbelievably grateful and happy that we get to have them as our moms. So, as a small token of appreciation, we as a staff decided to honor our mothers this May with messages to show how much we love and appreciate them.

To My Mother- Roshini Adunoor

My mom is a sweet and wonderful person. She’s also there for me as a mother, and as a friend. As a mother, she’s there to care for me, puts my needs first all the time, and guides me through life. She’s always there to answer questions because becoming an adult is challenging, but she makes the process a little less scary.

As a friend, she’s there to go on random shopping trips with me. She’s there to laugh and goof off with me in the car. She’s there to have random wrestling matches out of nowhere when we just both happen to meet in the kitchen at the same time when getting a glass of water. To randomly come into my room to check up on me and see how I’m doing. She’s always been more than a mother for me and I value that more than anything. I love you mom.

For my mom - Suhayla A.

My mom is an icon, a legend, and she is the moment. Years after having kids, she went back to college to get a degree in nursing. She’s been a nurse for about six years now because of her hard work. She’s actually about to get her Bachelor’s this year too! Class of 2021 grad :D. She’s a complete badass.

And that’s amazing but that’s not how I know her. When I think of my mom, I think of the random fruit bowls she sometimes gives me. I think of how she gives the warmest hugs. How she’s always a shoulder to cry on when I need it most. How she’s always given me the best wisdom when I haven’t known the answers myself. She’s always been my best friend and I hope it stays that way for years to come. I love you!

To my Beautiful Mommy Dear- Lauren Bellamy

How can I describe my mother?

I call her Mommy Dear,

Because of her sweet and nurturing nature.

How can I describe my mother?

Mommy is selfless.

Always putting the needs of my sister and I

And our family

Above her own.

How can I describe my mother?

She has an infectious laugh,

And a beautiful smile.

She can make any gray day

Happy again.

How can I describe my mother?

She’s been through a lot.

She’s a fighter.

A warrior.

A force that no one can stop,

Especially if my sister and I are threatened.

How do I describe my mother?

I describe her as one of my favorite people in the world.

I love her with everything I have,

And feel that I can never repay her

For all that she’s done for me.

I love you, Mommy,

And hope that one day, I can be

As good of a mom as you are to me.

Jamie’s Message to her mom:

I dedicate this message to my mother, Angie. You have always been there to support me emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Whenever I am struggling, whether I know it or not, you try to make me feel better. Your hugs are the warmest, an embrace filled with your entire essence. I’m not always the best—sometimes I’m rude, other times I’m distant—but you protect me regardless. I will have achieved nothing if I haven’t embodied your joy, your motivation, and your spirit. I’m eternally grateful to be your daughter. All love to you, mummy.

For my mom, from your daughter - Elizabeth S.

My mom has always put my sister and I first. She is always the first person to ask me how my day is, and the last person I see before going to sleep. She can read me unlike any other, and always knows when to comfort me or keep her distance. For her perception, kindness, and empathy, today I would like to honor her. She has taught me strength, persistence, and diligence. She has instilled values of education and honesty. She has shaped me into the person I am today.

I hope you can enjoy the warm spring days to come while planting in your garden or working at the farm. I hope we can spend the next few months close together before I go to college in the fall. I hope you know how much you mean to me, Emily, dad, and grandma. You take care of us all, and we want you to know how much we love you too.

From your daughter,

Elizabeth

For Ma - Vaishnavi Srirama

I can’t express how thankful I am for everything that you have given me and done for me throughout my life. You’ve been my number one teacher, the one person I can lean on for anything, and the person who gives the warmest hugs even when I’m not sad. It pains me to be so far away from you on Mother’s Day; I wish I was home celebrating with you and the family.

I guess the most simple way to put this is I love you, Ma. You’ve been there through all my highs and all my lows. You’ve seen me accomplish everything that I have to this date, and have stood by my side, with your endless support and love. I am where I am today solely because of your sacrifices, your love, and you. And I am eternally thankful for all that you have done to give me the best life possible. I love you, Ma.

We are so happy to be able to honor our lovely Roshini Adunoor with the title of April 2021 Woman of the Month. You probably know Roshini through your inspiring and joy-filled positive messages that we debut every issue as well as her entertaining and fun quizzes. We know Roshini through her infectious smile and hilarious jokes as well as her big and loving heart. She is genuinely one of the sweetest people that you will ever meet and never fails to turn a bad day into a good one. Roshini is currently at George Mason University getting a major in Civil Engineering, and just had a birthday on March 30th. She is also a devoted BTS ARMY and lover of Genshin Impact. March 12, 2021

Our wonderful March 2021 Woman of the Month is one of our own, Miss Jamie C. Hill!!! When discussing who we should have for our Woman of the Month this month, all of us automatically said Jamie because she is the epitome of a queen. She has written many informative and enlightening articles, as well as beautiful and powerful poems. She is an extremely caring individual who goes above and beyond in everything that she does whether it’s for the magazine, school or in her personal time. Jamie graduated from Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School last year, and is currently getting her undergraduate degree at VCU with a major in Psychology and a minor in African-American Studies. We are so excited to be able to honor her as our March 2021 Woman of the Month.

REMEMBERING TWO AMAZING WOMEN: MS. LILLIE MAE WHITE AND MS. SARA-ALYSE NELSON

December 31, 2020

Honoring My Dear Cousin, Lillie Mae “Mae Mae” White

Lauren Bellamy

As you will read later on in my article “What 2020 Has Taught Us”, this year suddenly turned for an even worse year than it already was, when my family and I lost my cousin, Mae Mae. Even though she was my cousin, she was like an aunt to me, and a huge part of my mom’s side of the family period because she was who pretty much everyone would turn to to watch their children. As the picture above shows, Mae Mae was always smiling, no matter what she may have been feeling. She made an effort to attend as much as she could, and considering unfortunately my sister and I lost all of our grandparents at a young age, she filled that void of attending school events, birthday parties, and even my debutante ball, which is pictured above. I loved her dearly, and always will, because she was always there for my family. I remember earlier this year, when she was in the hospital, she gave me a graduation present when she genuinely did not have to. On my birthday this year, she had also been in the hospital, and made sure to call me to wish me a happy birthday. Mae Mae was always there, and when we found out she passed away, the fact that she wasn’t going to be there was terrifying. But then I realized, her spirit is always with us because she had always been there. Her legacy will last forever because of the impact she made of always being there.

I remember whenever I would see her, if I was able to, I would give her a hug and say hey, and when she was about to leave, I would give her another hug, and say, “I love you”. Every time my mom and her would get ready to get off of the phone, my mom would say, “love you” and Mae Mae would always reply, “I love you too” in a sweet, gentle voice. Our family always made an effort to say “I love you” to her, and we thankfully got to say it to her a couple hours before she passed. We also always said thank you whenever she would attend one of our book club annual events, birthday parties or if she would come over to babysit my sister and I. I don’t think until we lose someone, we truly acknowledge the amount of appreciation we should give them, and it’s upsetting because we, or at least I do this, regret not saying thank you enough. Like I said, I said “thank you” as much as I could to Mae Mae but I hope everyone in her life did because she didn’t have to do half of the things that she did for us, but she did. Honoring her as a Woman of the Month is just a small token of my appreciation and love for her, because she genuinely did so much and in my opinion, didn’t get half as much appreciation as she deserved.

I will always cherish our times together filled with fun, laughter and smiles. I will miss seeing her at family gatherings or awaiting her call on my birthday. I will miss celebrating her birthday with her. I will miss the moments when she would be over our house and take little naps while just sitting on the couch. I will genuinely miss her laugh, smile, and voice because they always brought a smile to my face to hear and see. Thank you, Mae Mae, for everything.

Honoring the Life and Character of a Beloved Teacher, Ms. Sara-Alyse Nelson

Vaishnavi Srirama

Ms. Nelson was the kindest soul one could ever meet. She was always so understanding of her students’ problems and always made sure to act as a friend when her students needed her support. Everyday, she would walk into the classroom with a smile on her face, ready to teach her students and make the day worthwhile. Her work ethic was commendable; she was tireless in adhering to our needs as her students and making sure we got the best of what we learned in her classroom.

Her character was, without a doubt, memorable in the best way. Her students will never forget her kindness and compassion in the times they struggled most. We will always remember how much she cared for us and our educational and personal needs. We will honor her memories with us, her smile, her laugh, her beauty, and her soul.

CELEBRATING OUR NOVEMBER 2020 WOMAN OF THE MONTH: DR. GREENLEE NAUGHTON!!!

November 30, 2020

Congratulations to our November Woman of the Month, Dr. Greenlee Naughton!!! Many of the staff actually had the honor to be taught by this lady last year, as she was our IB English 12 teacher, and even though our time with her was cut short, she truly made a positive and lasting impact on all of our lives. She taught our class with grace and made all of us feel comfortable and not to be afraid to speak up in class on the various texts that we discussed. Dr. Naughton is also a mother to three children and received her doctoral degree a few years ago. She also was awarded with Henrico County Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year in 2017. She is such a caring and kind person, so we wanted to celebrate her for all that she has done and will continue to do in the future.

She's currently running for governor of Virginia and her platform for running is exactly what we need to see for the future of Virginia as well as the country. We are so happy to be able to highlight her as our first woman of the month for Hear Her Speak, and our founder/editor/writer Lauren and editor/writer Jamie got a chance to sit down and speak with her for a few minutes. We hope you enjoy our interview with Delegate Carroll Foy and take some time to learn a little bit more about her.
